Event Description:
One of San Diego entrepreneur John Spreckels’ biggest achievements in the early 1900s, was the construction and operation of a railroad between San Diego and El Centro. Built by Spreckels between 1907 and 1919, it is still in service. But construction of the railroad was fraught with problems from the start. Natural and other disasters repeatedly halted construction or operations and damaged or collapsed carefully engineered tunnels and numerous trestles. Author Reena Deutsch will recount the colorful history of the San Diego and Arizona (Eastern) Railway in a free, illustrated lecture at 7 p.m., February 23, at the Coronado Museum of History & Art, 1100 Orange Ave., Coronado. To reserve a seat, please call (619) 435-7242.
