2010 San Diego Bay Parade of Lights Dedicated to San Diego Boy
Donations Will Help Children Needing Critical Care at Rady Children’s Hospital
SAN DIEGO , Calif. —The 39th Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights on December 12th and 19th is dedicated to Anthony Cole DeWeese, the 8-year-old-boy who lost his life in a fatal boating accident during last year’s Parade.
The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights has partnered with Rady Children’s Hospital to help other children who are in need of critical care this holiday season. Donations are now being accepted and will be designated to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
“Everyone on the waterfront felt so helpless last year. We're thankful to have this opportunity and hope it helps the DeWeese Family with their healing process,” said Larry Baumann, Chairman of the Parade Committee. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them."
This year’s Parade is themed “The Sounds of Christmas” and starts with fireworks at 5:30 p.m. and will finish at 9:30 p.m. A special boat with red lights inspired by Anthony’s favorite color will be dedicated to Rady Children’s Hospital in his honor.
The fatal accident occurred last year near Harbor Island on San Diego Bay . The two other families that had joined the DeWeese family for the Parade had children with critical injuries and were treated at Rady Children’s Hospital. One child will need additional surgery next year.
“We want to thank the Parade Committee and Rady’s Children Hospital for making such a special effort on behalf of our son,” said Alan DeWeese, Anthony’s father. “Our family has had a very difficult year. We continue to miss Anthony every day and hope that other children can be helped from this tragedy.”
Anthony Cole DeWeese was born at Scripps La Jolla Hospital in 2001, and he has two brothers, Nathan and Dominick. He was a student at Adobe Bluffs Elementary and was well known for his infectious smile, endless energy, and positive outlook on life. He was the student representative of his third grade class, the goalie of his ice-hockey team, a junior black belt in karate, an avid animal lover, and a Cub Scout. He had big plans to own a motorcycle and marry his neighborhood sweetheart.
