Event Description:
Golf for Wildlife is an annual fundraising tournament started by a reptile and amphibian zoo keeper. The goal of Golf for Wildlife is to promote public awareness and contributes to local and global conservation efforts through fundraising and scholarships. Each year, local and global projects are chosen and benefitted with funds raised from our annual event. To put it simply, we want to save wildlife by playing some golf! Golf for Wildlife would like to invite you to join the 4th annual Golf for Wildlife tournament on June 4, 2017 at 11am. This 18-hole golf event will take place at the Coronado Golf Course (2000 Visalia Row, Coronado, CA 92118) to benefit the Fiji Iguana Conservation fund for endangered native iguanas, a $1,000 dollar scholarship for a graduate student researching plant or animal conservation, and to help protect a National Park in Sumatra that is home to the endangered Sumatran tiger, elephant and rhino. Fiji Iguanas, part of the Fijian Iguana Conservation Fund at the San Diego Zoo Global, are in urgent need of our help. The Fiji iguana is currently listed as ‘Endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation (IUCN), due to habitat loss and the existence of almost identical looking invasive species. Funds raised from this event will benefit genetic research of several new Fiji iguana species recently identified on various islands throughout Fiji. Enclosures will be built on the islands for in-situ breeding in preparation for future releases of young Fiji iguanas. In 1982 Bukit Barisan Selatan was declared a wildlife sanctuary on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is rich in biodiversity and is home to the world’s three most endangered species: the Sumatran elephant (fewer than 2000 survive today), the Sumatran rhino (fewer than 100 animals and declining rapidly), and the Sumatran tiger (total global population around 400 animals). Many species of both plants and animals thrive in Bukit Barisan Selatan, but threats such as wildlife poaching, illegal logging, and outside encroachment are threatening their survival. Funds raised will help purchase two motorcycles and help build a guardhouse for rangers to help combat the threats, which will diminish increasing problems facing the wildlife sanctuary.
